This original diorama depicts a circa 1939 aerial perspective plan of the central area of the nation's capital, as conceived by the National Capital Park and Planning Commission. Clearly visible are various monuments, the Capitol, the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers, Union Station, the White House and the National Mall with the Tidal Basin and Reflecting Pool.

Records indicate that this piece may have originally been constructed for the Capital Parks Planning Commission and then given to the Interior Museum. It was installed in the Museum's galleries in 1945.
