Shine (1996), directed by Scott Hicks
Hicks spent ten years researching and co-writing this drama based on pianist David Helfgott's life story. For Hicks, this moment 'was my first glimpse that Geoffrey had found the real character of David Helfgott, and the joy of this moment was fabulous'. Rush, who was just beginning his film career, painstakingly prepared for the role and had told Hicks: 'When I find the character, I'll never lose it.' It was young photographer Lisa Tomasetti's first day taking stills on a feature: 'I just remember that being quite a brilliant shoot.' Shine was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and Rush won the 1997 Best Actor Oscar for his performance.
