he was one of the few musicians
who essentially re-invented the
Brazilian cross-over sound after
bossa nova. But for him to apply
his creative to ardent
commercialism is as equally

In effect, Gil's gone pop!
RAZILIAN pop music is a
strange beast. It is
a particularly poor foreign
language entry in the Eurovision
Song Contest. It might be 'iffy
to us but, of course, it will sell by
the cartload on its native soil - a
fact that Gilberto has decided to
exploit with his new album "Raca
Humana".
"The style I have used here is
Brazilian pop music. Gil
needlessly explained when we
chatted before his recent gig over
here, "a territory I have not
aimed at or particularly reached
before.
"For the last fifteen years this
market has been dominated by
imported music but now Brazilian
artists are turning that around.
Everything has gone rock 'n' roll
so why not join it and not ignore
it. It's better to use it so there is
