In the 1950s, doll artist Dewees Cochran began her Grow Ups series of handcrafted dolls. She designed three girl dolls and two boy dolls, and she made five models of each doll, showing the dolls at ages 5, 7, 11, 16, and 20. She made her Grow Ups descendants of fictional characters in American folklore: Susan Stormalong, Angela Appleseed, Belinda Bunyan, Peter Ponsett, and Jeff Jones.
