When American cities grew in the 19th century to include paved streets, sidewalks, and parks for leisurely strolls, manufacturers offered perambulators for mothers to transport (and show off) their so-adorable sons and daughters. Girls, imitating their mothers, used diminutive doll carriages to show off their own treasured dolls.
