Doll:Chatty Cathy

Mattel, Inc. offered its Chatty Cathy beginning in 1959. The line of talking figures was Mattel's best-selling doll of the 1960s, second to only Barbie. The doll housed a phonograph in its abdomen, and by pulling the ring attached to a string, Chatty's playmate activated her voice. The doll initially spoke 11 phrases, and Mattel used the technology in several dolls in the line including Charmin Chatty, Chatty Baby, Tiny Chatty Baby, and others. Talking versions of other Mattel figures included Mrs. Beasley, Bugs Bunny, and Herman Munster. In the late 1960s, Mattel redesigned a few Chatty dolls. This Chatty Cathy, marked 1969, is the redesigned Chatty Cathy herself.
