French Fashion dolls from the second half of the 19th century came with more than just the latest fashionable dress for visiting, or dining, or taking tea. Some dolls had their own extensive wardrobes or trousseaus of elaborately stitched dresses, gowns, robes, coats, and underwear. They had lavish accessories: kid gloves, hats, umbrellas, purses, jewelry, even opera glasses. The dolls and their ensembles appealed to the growing American middle class, and parents were pleased to give their daughters dolls with accessories that mimicked the trophies of prosperity they themselves proudly owned.
