The most significant bisque doll-parts supplier of the mid-19th century, E. Barrois furnished doll heads, glass eyes, wigs, limbs, torsos, shoes, clothing and hats to numerous "doll makers" who actually made no dolls of their own but "assembled" the parts they received from subcontractors to make a doll and market it under the names of their own firms and stores. The doll heads Barrois supplied to assemblers bear an "E B" inscription. The firm operated from 1858 to 1877, the heyday of French fashion doll production.
