In November 2013, Walt Disney Pictures released "Frozen," its 53rd animated feature film. Loosely based on Hans Christian Anderson?s fairy tale, The Snow Queen, the story focuses on two royal sisters from the fictional land of Arendelle. Princess Anna must locate her elder sister, the newly-crowned Queen Elsa, who vanished after losing control of her powers over ice and snow and accidentally trapped their kingdom under a spell of eternal winter. Anna is joined in her quest by the iceman Kristoff, his pet reindeer Sven, and an anthropomorphic snowman named Olaf.

"Frozen" became a blockbuster nearly overnight, with many critics claiming it was Disney?s best animated film since its 1990s renaissance era. Many credited the film?s popularity with its focus on the relationship between the two sisters, and their acceptance of one another?s differences. Though Anna does experience a traditional romantic "happily ever after," her romance is always portrayed as secondary to her love for Elsa. The theatrical release of "Frozen" earned a stunning $1.27 billion worldwide, and as of 2015, it ranks as the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The film earned Best Picture from the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Its breakout character vocal, "Let It Go," sung by Tony Award-wining soprano Idina Menzel, earned an Academy Award for Best Original Song, and became so popular amongst children that director Jennifer Lee apologized to parents for its unexpected longevity.
