Mattel offered PJ Sparkles, a 15-inch doll available from 1988 to 1992. Made of vinyl and plastic, the doll sold with the slogan, "Hug me, and I light up!" Operating on a nine-volt battery, the doll sported twinkling lights on her hair bow, earrings, heart, and bracelet. PJ's back story was explained in a TV movie. The animated tale presents PJ as an orphan who wishes only to find someone to love her. Her own well-being, and that of all the orphan friends she meets in Twinkle Town depends on how well she is loved by her little owner. The story made little sense, but it apparently made the doll popular. Mattel produced dolls of PJ's friends and a little sister who also lit up when hugged.
