Rainbow Brite, began life as a product line of cards, dolls, and toys that mushroomed in popularity when Rainbow and her several friends appeared in animated TV shows, movies, books, and other media. The line, popular through the 1980s, has found a new following as present-day mothers share the line of their childhood with their own daughters. Recently, however, Rainbow Brite and her friends received a drastic make-over. Dolls in the line now appear much older and more mature than they used to. Some child-development experts call this aging of young children's playthings "age compression," In other words, toys once made for nine and ten year olds are now marketed to five to seven year olds.
