Shell collecting first appealed to well-to-do Europeans who could afford to purchase the exotic shells seamen brought back from their explorations of faraway oceans and beaches. As world commerce and travel became more common in the 18th and 19th centuries, many middle-class ladies took up shell decorating as a home craft, and world travelers often purchased souvenir shell dolls from the seaside cities they visited.
