Muriel Fahrion, an illustrator at American Greeting_s Juvenile and Humorous card department, designed Strawberry Shortcake and her cat, Custard. In 1979, Kenner Products licensed the character and released the first Strawberry Shortcake doll. She resembled a rag doll with freckles and a mop of red yarn curls on her head. Lynn Edwards developed the characters and the storyline. Each character had their own fruit or dessert-themed name, related clothing, a pet, and hair that smelled like her fruit or dessert. They lived in Strawberryland. A handful of animated television specials about these characters aired in the early 1980, but these primarily pushed the toy line. Strawberry Shortcake and her friends appealed to young girls because the scented creatures with fruity names conveyed security and affection.
