The Bru doll-making company operated in France from 1866 to 1899. First known for its bisque head "poupee" dolls depicting French women in the latest Paris fashions, the company began producing dolls representing children in the 1870s. Bru became best known for these child dolls called bebes. This doll is an example of a "Circle and Dot" Bru, which were made between 1879 and 1884. This designation comes from circle and dot markings on the back of the head. The doll wears her original clothing of rust-colored silk and velvet. Her face and arms are tinted chocolate brown. She is thus an example of the growing interest in ethnic dolls European society favored in the last quarter of the 19th century.
