Francois Gaultier bedevils doll historians and collectors. They know that the Gaultier firm made bisque bebe heads for several other doll makers including A. Thuillier, Jullien, Rasbery & Delphieu, and Gesland. They also know that Gaultier made bisque doll heads, doll limbs, and all-bisque dolls and that bebe heads marked F.G. differ in appearance from the dolls Gaultier made for other firms. Historical documents suggest, however, that Gaultier did not make dolls of its own. It most likely sold its F.G.-marked heads to doll-assembling companies. Gaultier operated from 1860 until it joined S.F.B.J. in 1899.
