Before toy makers discovered composition, rubber, vinyl, and plastic to make dolls, many tried to use wax to make the heads, hands, and legs for their creations. The translucence and texture of wax suggested the very look and feel of human skin. In addition, wax is very malleable; some gifted modelers created such lifelike faces from the material, they might be more appropriately called artists than doll manufacturers. Several wax doll makers, in fact, specialized in portrait dolls of well-known royalty and famous people.
