German doll makers specialized in making so-called wax over composition dolls, which were dolls with composition (like papier mache) heads to which manufacturers applied a coating of wax to soften the appearance of the hard material and make the dolls more lifelike. The composition base made the dolls easier to produce, hardier for play, and cheaper than poured wax dolls. Germans exported wax over composition dolls from about 1830 to about 1900.
