As a material for making dolls, wax was very delicate. To make it sturdy, doll makers added lead to the substance, a practice that cause the 1892 death of Charles Pierotti, one well-known London doll maker. Changes in temperature also destroyed wax heads as hot extremes made it melt and cold extremes made it contract and crack.
