This dolphin-shaped, marble fountain spout is an example of the luxury and opulence that could be found in Roman craftsmanship. It is from the Late Roman (4th century) archeological site of Villa Fortunatus in Fraga, Huesca. The head of Eros has also survived, along with the feet on the dolphin's back and the stirrups coming from its mouth. These elements combined suggest the original took the form of Eros riding the dolphin, as he does in classical mythology.
