Portrait of young man, half body, facing right, looking forward. Triangular face, wide forehead, small nose and mouth, brown eyes, dark and arched eyebrows. Gray hair with curl and tail detail on the left. Visible right ear. He wears a blue jacket with flower embroidery on the collar, along the opening, on the sleeves and on the pocket. White lace cuffs and type of tie and also under the insignia of the Order of Christ. On the left chest, a red rose with the Golden Fleece insignia. Vest and pants in the same color as the jacket. Right arm extended forward; open hand; index finger pointing map with the inscription Brazil on furniture, together with other maps, books and a globe, on whose upper part it supports the left hand. In the background, brown drapery, details of tassel and cord and part of a similar column architecture. To the left, in the distance, landscape with a lane of trees, hill and sky in gray and pink tones.
Dom José Francisco de Bragança (Lisbon, August 21, 1761 - Lisbon, September 11, 1788), firstborn son of D. Maria I and his consort, Dom Pedro III. Dom José was the 8th Prince of Brazil and died prematurely of smallpox in Lisbon, at the age of twenty-seven. His younger brother, Dom João, became the heir to the crown and, later, king of Portugal, with the name of Dom João VI.
