Double-action pedal harp

Sébastien Érard1810/1830

Double-action pedal means that the pedal can be pressed in two different positions so that the vibrating lenght of the strings is appropriately shortened by a mechanical system of tangents and, hence, they produce notes that are altered by one or two semitones. There are seven pedals, each of which acts on the namesake strings. This specimen has an additional pedal (rénforcement) that regulates the opening of the five rectangular doors (soupapes) located at the back of the body to regulate the intensity of sound issuing from the instrument. The Empire style of decoration is underscored by the grooved column and by the capital adorned with winged female figures alternated by acanthus leaves. This specimen is one of the company Erard’s many mass produced models. It was marketed by the name of harpe grecque.
