Harpsichords, particularly those with lots of decoration, were the keyboard instruments of the rich. Most surviving French harpsichords from this period were made in Paris, so this one is unusual in coming from near Dijon in eastern France. The lid painting shows the Triumph of Neptune and Amphitrite and is based on an earlier painting by Louis de Boullogne the younger.
