Dr. C.G. Suits is shown assembling a plastic container holding GE man-made diamonds. The display, which was mounted on a plaque for presentation to the Smithsonian, has at its center a cluster of some of the first diamonds produced in the GE Research Laboratory. Surrounding the tiny clusters are 100 carats of small industrial-grade diamonds produced in a pilot-plant at GE's Carboloy Department, which is now engaged in limited production of man-made diamonds. In presenting the historic stones to the Smithsonian, Dr. Suits predicted that GE's diamonds would have "an important impact on American industry and defense." The U.S., which is now dependent upon foreign sources for its diamonds, imports approximately 90% of the world's present production of diamonds, most of them serving industry in tools that grind, polish, cut and saw. In addition to bolstering the nation's self-sufficiency, declared Suits, the development of a method of making diamonds holds promise of further scientific achievements.
