China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

This robe, tailored to be worn in the summer by an imperial prince, has a round collar, a large front panel opening on the right, horse-hoof cuffs, and vents on four sides. It is made of “imperial yellow” sha gauze; the color yellow was exclusive to the emperor. There are nine dragons embroidered on the robe with couched gold thread. They are depicted in different postures on the front, back, shoulders, inner and outer front panels. In addition, colored satin stitch embroidery is used for the flaming pearls, bats and clouds and pair of peaches, as well as the ocean waves, mountains, coral and stone chimes on the robe’s hem.
