Dragon robe, kesi tapestry on purple ground

China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

This robe, carefully woven using kesi, has a round collar, a large front panel opening on the right, horse-hoof cuffs, ice plum patterned edge, vents on both sides, and with collar patterns of waves and dragons. Through the technique whereby one set of warp ends is woven with continuous waft lats, the artist decorated the robe with waves patterns stitched with couched gold treads. On top of this, there are other decorations like clouds, cranes and nine dragons, which are depicted in different postures; there are three dragons each on the front and back, one each on the two shoulders, and one on the inner lapel. Additional decorations include flower baskets, fans, bamboo flutes, conches and other auspicious patterns like fire beads, and bats.
