Purse, c. 1830s. American. Stenciled cotton velvet on stamped brass frame.
Innovations in textile technologies in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth  centuries had a tremendous impact on the production of calico, making these multi- colored cotton fabrics affordable for almost every budget. Between 1825 and 1850, stenciling was an especially popular form of decoration, as seen in this purse.
