Center: Anna Sui / Dress / Black lace and net / Fall 1997, USA / Lent by Anna Sui
Anna Sui is often inspired by popular music. Gothic rock was a source of inspiration for her Fall 1997 collection, she says. Interestingly, that season, many designers created styles that were described in the media as “gothic.”

Right: Christopher Kane / Dress / Black leather / Fall 2008, England / Lent by Christopher Kane
When Gothic: Dark Glamour was on view at MFIT in 2008-2009, Christopher Kane was a recent graduate of Central Saint Martins. He continues to be one of London’s hottest new designers. For this collection, he was inspired by Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.
