Dulzaina (conical pipe)

Wind instrument with a double reed. Made of boxwood with metal appliqués. The dulzaina consists of a conical pipe with eight holes (seven at the front and one at the back) and another two on the side of the bottom part (winds). It is normally accompanied by a timbrel. Trios are often formed with two dulzainas and one timbrel.

The keyless dulzaina is known in Navarre as a gaita (pipes), where it is very typical in the local fiestas, from the Ebro Valley to the Pyrenees. It is also found in Rioja. However, it is very uncommon in the Atlantic area of Navarre. It is also played —to a lesser extent— in Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia, and since the 1970s, there have been groups in Lower Navarre and Lapurdi.

This piece was made by Navarran craftsman Tomás Peñalba, ("EL Chino") (Pamplona, twentieth century) and belongs to the Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa's X. Otero collection.
