A new form of fans made of tail hair of animals, bellwether deer in many cases, emerged from the end of the Han dynasty (202 BC-220 AD) to Wei, Jin and Northern & Southern Dynasties (220-581 AD). Such kind of fans were usually called “hair fan” or “deer hair fan”. It was once a custom for the literati to hold a “hair fan” in hand, as a symbol for “supreme leadership”.
