Dust coat

Dust coats became fashionable in the early 20th century. They coincided with the rise of the open motor vehicle as they protected the wearer's clothes when travelling on dirt roads.

The distinctive jet black cuffs of stiffened satin strike a dramatic contrast with the natural silk of this example. The coat has a loose and unfitted style so that it could easily be worn over layers of clothes.
