The seismic tremors of 23 February 2008 in Saarwellingen caused significant damage across the entire region. Among other significant buildings, the St. Blasius church as also affected; many stones came loose and fell from the walls of the Catholic church. These tremors achieved the Saarland's highest ever value on the Richter scale and were cause for great concern among the population. The stones can therefore also be seen as a testimony for the acceleration of processes that would soon bring an end to mining in the region.
