The E-mu 2000 follows the conventional style of modular synthesis, consisting of connections being made between modules via physical patch cables. Perhaps the most unique feature of E-mu systems is the firm-wire feature, which allows the user to set patches on the back of each module. As such, certain special sounds or frequently used patches could be saved, a feature particularly useful for live performance. Notable composer, producer, and professional sound designer Patrick Gleeson purchased this customized E-mu modular synthesizer system in early 1973, citing the importance of the instrument’s polyphonic digital scanning keyboard in his performance approach.
