From the late classical period onwards (c. 350-330 BC), jewellery is found in the Mediterranean region of Eastern Greece in the fashion known as 'hoop earrings': earrings that can be closed using a hook and eye. These earrings, made in the shape of recumbent griffons, are a fine example of this style. The hoop is made of solid gold, with incised decorations.
