Reducing oxygen in the kiln leads to color transformations and is achieved when a clay piece is loaded next to a kiln wall or piece of kiln furniture to help ash deposits build up on the pot. Areas exposed to direct flames become reddish brown, while ash-covered areas turn almost black from the iron in the clay reacting with the carbon in the ash. Deep grey to blue and even white colors emerge along the transition zones between the two extremes.
