Lace sample (front)

Cité de la dentelle et de la mode

Cité de la dentelle et de la mode
Calais, France

At the beginning of the 19th century, the progress of mechanisation made it possible to replace lace, previously made by hand, with mechanical tulle, to which patterns were applied by hand. This also simplified the production of large pieces. This sample shows the technique of sewing on hand-made motifs onto the tulle, which was sometimes cut behind the patterns to give the illusion of a piece made from the one attempt.
