Edge of the Cliff at Pourville

Claude Monet1882

Museum Barberini

Museum Barberini
Potsdam, Germany

In Normandy, Monet did not only paint tourist sights such as the famous rock formations of the Porte d’Aval and the Aiguille. Here he chose a marginal motif and made it spectacular by means of perspective. Similar to a photograph, the grassy edge of the cliff is in sharp focus, while the surface of the sea, the sky, and the cliffs of the bay in the distance are blurred.
