Edmontosaurus regalis

The Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum
London, United Kingdom

A herbivore with a unique and efficient way of eating, Edmontosaurus regalis belonged to a group of herd-living, duck-billed dinosaurs called hadrosaurs. This fossil skeleton shows the dinosaur in its death position, still half-buried in sandstone rock. It is about 74 to 72 million years old and was discovered in Alberta, Canada. E. regalis lived at a time when flowering plants were overtaking the earlier flora. It had a wide, flat beak with a powerful tongue that pushed food back towards multiple rows of grinding teeth in its cheeks. The upper teeth fitted perfectly over the outside of the lower ones, creating two powerful, interlocking grinding surfaces.
