Hobbema is the only known pupil of Jacob van Ruisdael. Less dramatic than Ruisdael's compositions, Hobbema's are lighter and more cheerful. He produced over thirty views of watermills, all based on drawings done in the eastern part of Holland. He used the motif of this mill several times, with its downward rush of water highlighted by rays of sun.
