The Reichs-Rundfunk-Gesellschaft (Reich Broadcasting Corporation) used the record cutter primarily for recording pieces that were not broadcast live or that were scheduled to be broadcast at a later point in time. The device was included in the equipment of a mobile broadcast van. From 1929, the pieces were recorded on sound foils which played for around 4.5 minutes. They are easier to handle than the alternative wax records, which had to be heated for recording.
