Bonnefantenmuseum
Maastricht, Netherlands

This installation consists of sculptures, painted wall panels, reliefs as well as framed drawings. The seventeen component themselves, in turn, consists of numerous elements, as can be seen with the block of fourteen framed drawings on transparent plastic. The installation also includes two horizontal and two vertical panel paintings. The vertical panels have opposite characters, one being expressive in black and red, the other subdued in three floating but touching rectangles in orange-colored primer. Particularly crucial to the charged atmosphere of “Eigentum Himmelreich” are the six sculptures, stacked constructions of used woods, reinforcing steel, glass and metal components that are placed in the center of the installation. The materials are comprised from the studio of Rainer Giese, an old friend of Knoebel. Via the title, the language and forms and the materials used, the installation alludes to the lives and work of Rainer Giese, Joseph Beuys and Blinky Palermo. Through those references to artists who were friends, no longer alive, “Eigentum Himmelreich” can be seen as a tribute and a personal dialogue with influential figures and ideas that are now belong to the “kingdom of heaven”.
