In the Antwerp metropolis, the Wonder Year (1566-1567) left deep political and religious traces. The citizens massively joined Calvinist and Lutheran denominations. In August the iconoclasm raged through the city. The Smeekschrift der Edelen, a petition to the Spanish government to suspend the strict religious ordinances against Protestantism, was immediately echoed. In Germany, leading Lutheran theologians saw the importance of the church of Antwerp. They sent reputed ministers to Antwerp to help with the expansion of the Protestant church. Moreover, they were always ready to give advice on ecclesiastical and theological issues, as with this pamphlet. An die frommen Christen zu Antdorff appeared in response to the Beeldenstorm. The extremely rare booklet sheds an interesting light on the international importance of the Lutheran Church of Antwerp.
