"From 1880 onward Santiago Rusiñol (Barcelona, 1861 - Aranjuez,1931) and Miquel Utrillo (Barcelona, 1862 - Sitges, 1934) strengthened their friendship and together, with Casas, Clarasó and Canudas, became an inseparable quintet. In the spring of 1889, Utrillo moved to Paris to become an art correspondent for La Vanguardia. Shortly after that, when Rusiñol moved to the French capital, both friends – together with Canudas and Clarasó– moved in together to a house located in rue de l’Orient.
Utrillo introduced Rusiñol to many of the Parisian artists of the moment and to the Bohemian circles of Montmartre that he knew so well from his time as a student.
This work, also known as “El invierno del artista” (The winter of the artist) and “Una tarde fría” (A cold afternoon, as it was exhibited for the first time in the Parés Exhibition Hall), Rusiñol depicts Utrillo sitting in profile while he warms his hands on a heater, probably the only one that was available in the inhospitable house that they shared in Paris.
The orange tones from the fire of the stove emerge from the grey and ochre that predominate in the painting, and inevitably attract the gaze of the spectator."
