Sea trials began in January 1889. The most important was the simulated attack on the cruiser Colón, on June 23. During this time, there were a number of stumbling blocks, both for the submarine and for Peral. However, all of them were successfully overcome.

The recently-appointed Navy Minister Beránger created a new Technical Commission which, despite the submarine’s successful tests, put in place a series of conditions that were difficult to fulfil. These challenges had the express purpost of hindering or stopping the project. Despite Peral’s best efforts (including a proposal for a larger submarine) the Naval Board shelved the project.
