London, United Kingdom

This Georgian pulpit with its elaborate carvings is topped by a gilded pelican feeding her young. Pelican's were symbolic of piety and sacrifice, as they were believed to pierce their chest in order to feed blood to their young. From this elevated box passages from the Bible would be read and explained.
