A widely used kilowatt hour meter is the Ferraris meter. It can be recognized by the horizontal rotating disc that measures the energy consumption. The disc is turned by the voltage difference between the voltage in the mains net and the voltage on the user's private net. The consumption can be read on a counter driven by this disc.
