On the console you can see the oldest preserved stone sculpture of St. Elisabeth. Elisabeth was canonized in 1235. Only a few years later an unknown master carved this figure out of the stone. Besides the depiction of Elisabeth in the glass paintings of the west choir, it is an impressive testimony to the early worship of Elisabeth in Naumburg Cathedral. An opening in the head of the sculpture for the storage of relics proves that the Naumburg canons insured their relics soon after the saints had been raised. The day of the arrival of the relics – May 2nd – was celebrated over centuries in the form of a festive procession.
