Between 1937 and 1941, the Federal Writers' Project, a program of the Works Progress Administration, conducted hundreds of interviews with Louisiana residents. Included among the interviews were older African American residents who had been enslaved or whose parents had been enslaved. Here, Elizabeth Ross Hite recalls a story of Jim, an enslaved man who ran away and eventually returned to the plantation where he lived.
