Description: Toyota worked in a style entirely of his own, engaging modernist, and at times minimalist, motifs with an exploration of the cosmos. In El Tiempo Anterior ao Nada Toyota situates a large, white ovoid, painted in large smooth swaths with a spatula, in the center of the canvas. Below the ovoid, Toyota divides the space with a rough, pale blue band, below which a rugged light yellow and blue band contains a circle. A passage of white, similar in color and texture to the ovoid, is situated below. To the left and right of the ovoid, two textural sections of bluish gray and ochre further divide the canvas, and in the far left corner, a portion of another circle appears, suggesting this composition is merely a small portion of a much larger cosmic space. -Text by Cierra Frances
