Embroidery with Lotus Pond and Paired Geese

China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

This piece which is believed to be a skirt panel was embroidered with an elegant, soothing lotus pond scene typical of sceneries of China’s Jiangnan area. Such a scene is a perfect illustration of the “charming ponds” (“满池娇”) genre of the popular court-life-themed poetry in the later Yuan dynasty (1271-1368 AD).
