Engraving of President Lincoln's death

Surrounded by family, doctors, friends and government officials, Abraham Lincoln remained unconscious throughout the night until he passed away at 7:22 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, 1865. Alexander Hay Ritchie, a popular engraver and artist, created this imagined death scene. Despite the number of people who passed in and out through the night, this drawing greatly exaggerated the number of people who could fit into the small bedroom. Additionally, because of his great height, Lincoln lay diagonally on the bed, not parallel as shown here.
